Seeing Double
Sung by Larry Kearns acc John Howarth (whistle)' Gerry Kearns (guitar)
Oh a lord on a pony came by t’other day, and he spied a fair damsel and to her did say,
Tell me dear who’s piglin’s are them in yon sty, they belong t’thowd sow sir, the girl made reply.
O you’re very sharp witted the lord then did say, then by the same rule who may own you I pray,
Mi mother she said with a smile on her cheek, but Jimmy o’ Nancy ‘ll claim me next week.
Who’s Jimmy o’ Nancy the noble man said, is he some wealthy squire or gentleman bred,
O he’s no wealthy squire, the maiden said she, but he’s top lad at Nancy an’ he skens in one eye.
Why do you prefer one at squints the lord said, co’s one at see’s straight ‘as less use for ‘is head,
An’ one ‘at see’s over two fences at once, can mind two folks business or else he’s a dunce.
Well answered young maiden the lord then said he, there’s a hint to m’ meddlin’ a plainly can see,
Now what can I give you you’re favours to gain, give mi sight of you’re back, said the maid with destine.
Well a week after this saw the couple at church, they were met with the lord as they entered the porch.
An’d he promised ‘em then that when twins blessed their lot, a good acre of land he would add to their plot.
Just nine months after this, the young couple were blessed, an’th’child in it’s cradle lay suckin’ his fist.
An’ then the good maid thus accosted the lord, in’th’ matter of twins will you stick to you’r word.
But I only see one said the lord with a smile, an’ he took the young baby from his cot for a while,
O’ you’re dun for said t’maid less you’re promise you rue, you may only see one but our Jimmy see’s two.

SEEING DOUBLE
A latterday ballad of chivalry. Daring knight meets simple country maid. For once, no gentle romance ensues nor any seduction scene that leaves the maid lamenting while the knight rides off grinning under his visor. Instead, we are presented with a bit of cottage humour with an ironic edge to it.
