Platt's
Sung by Larry Kearns chorus by John Howarth and Gerry Kearns.
Chorus
Sons of labour clear the way, Platt’s and Co they all do say,
Is a shop for better pay, with a golden cheque on Friday.
Flag of labour now unfold, whilst to you a tale is told,
It’s not of Australia’s gold nor a place in California,
Chorus
Sons of labour clear the way, Platt’s and Co they all do say,
Is a shop for better pay, with a golden cheque on Friday.
It’s of a place in Owdham town, a workshop of great renown,
Known in every trading town almost Europe over.
Chorus
Sons of labour clear the way, Platt’s and Co they all do say,
Is a shop for better pay, with a golden cheque on Friday.
Monday morning we start at six , everyone with a pocket full of cheques,
And he pops one on to the box of tricks, for his ready money on Friday.
Chorus
Sons of labour clear the way, Platt’s and Co they all do say,
Is a shop for better pay, with a golden cheque on Friday.

Platt’s:
Platt Brothers is a leading textile engineering firm with its roots in Oldham. The Oldham Tinkers found the words of the song in a local library, apparently in the handwriting of the man, a mechanic working for Platt’s, who wrote it in 1884. Alas, the copy has since disappeared from the library, and the Tinkers can’t recall the last verse. So here is the song without its end.
